Alumnus Returns to Sackets

On a snowy January afternoon, one of our former exchange students stopped by the school with his family to relive his experiences here.

Carlos Torres spent a year here at Sackets Harbor in 1987 with his host family, Pete and Bonnie Phillips. While in town visiting the Phillipses and before sightseeing in Niagara Falls and Washington, D.C., Carlos, his wife, and his two children, C.J. and Sofi, managed to find one of Carlos’s former teachers, Mr. Robert Hand.

Carlos and his family took a tour of the building, looked at old yearbooks, and reminisced with Mr. Hand about some of Carlos’s former classmates. Carlos fondly recalled reading the novel Alive, about South American rugby players who crashed in the Andes Mountains, in Mr. Hand’s class and how it helped him to better understand and speak English. He also mentioned other teachers such as Mr. Lyle Weaver and Mr. Damon Ormsby who had an impact on his experiences here.

Carlos is now a businessman in Ecuador and credits much of his success to the time he spent in Sackets Harbor with his host family, friends, and teachers. Carlos would like to hear from any of his friends from the Class of 1987; his current address is:

Carlos Torres Lote 224 El Cortijo Km 9.5 via a Samborondon Guayaquil,Ecuador South America
